The Industrial Building Prize for outstanding examples of industrial and commercial architecture was awarded during the IREM Symposium at Stuttgart University of Technology. ATP Munich was one of the four finalists chosen from 55 entries in the “building” category for its Daimler Powertrain Integration Center (AIZ) and Computer Center (RZ).

The prize, which is jointly awarded to the client and the designer of the building, was gratefully accepted by Michaela Hauser, Managing Director of ATP Munich and the project leader Michael Mann.

ATP architects engineers successfully developed an architectural solution that harmonically combined Daimler’s corporate identity requirements with the complex uses and the appearance of the building”, was the evaluation of jury member Thomas Brandin (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Industriebau e.V.). “The functions, technology, and proportions of the 136,000 m³ of built volume and 25,000 m² of usable space were combined in a steel and concrete structure and wrapped in a light, rear-ventilated metal façade.”

Prizes were awarded to projects that excited the jury with the balanced way in which they combined design, function, sustainability and economy in a spirit of social responsibility and holistic thinking. “The building which has been tailor-made for Daimler is impressive not only due to its structural and technical dimensions but also the unusual stacking up of the highly sensitive use areas. For us, the award provides confirmation that our efforts of the past few years were worthwhile”, said Michael Mann.

The structure of the building is largely determined by the requirement to separate the two use areas, AIZ and RZ, into two fully independent technical and functional zones. The AIZ is a testing center for cars and contains a high altitude chamber, six roller test beds, and three powertrain test beds for entire vehicles. Offices, workshops, and storage areas are located directly adjacent to this. With its innovative cooling center the approximately 2,300 square meters of the RZ operate at high levels of energy efficiency.

The Industrial Building Prize was first awarded in June 2016 as a means of recognizing buildings and urban interventions that demonstrate high levels of industrial and commercial architecture. The supporters and promoters of the prize include the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Industriebau e.V. (AGI), The Regional Association of the BDA in Baden-Württemberg, the Chambers of Architects and Engineers of Baden-Württemberg, the business development agency of the Stuttgart Region, and IREM, University of Stuttgart.
