This year’s prestigious ICONIC AWARD in the category “Innovative Architecture” has been presented to the multifunctional educational center for children in the village of Holzgau in the Lechtal Nature Park Region in Tyrol.
The prize was awarded on 8th October in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
“It is a particularly special distinction for a building of this scale to receive an international award for exemplary innovative architecture” was the delighted reaction of Lead Project Manager Stefan Köll on behalf of the Design & Research Team from ATP Innsbruck.
The design of the child-friendly building at an altitude of 1,100 meters is in keeping with a long-kept Alpine architectural tradition: a serene wooden volume on a stone base, which is a particularly common building approach in Lechtal. The BIZ (Bildungszentrum) is home to a kindergarten and a primary school as well as a nursery and afternoon childcare facilities for children of all ages between two and ten years old. The use areas are not all strictly separated and spatial interfaces and synergies are positively encouraged. Just like in the name of the village, wood (Holz) also plays an important role as a building material – alongside concrete, glass and wool: solid timber walls, floorboards from local larch and a roof structure which soars across the entire space.
The ICONIC AWARD is presented to visionary buildings, innovative products and sustainable communication from all parts of the architecture, construction and real estate sector. ATP Vienna also won this prestigious international architecture and design award back in 2013 for the G3 Shopping Resort.
