Everyone knows that two is better than one. And the delight at yet another BREEAM award is twice as great. Already honored for the “excellent” design of the project, Redevco Switzerland & Central Europe GmbH has now been awarded “Excellent” BREEAM certification for the sustainable quality of the completed MAHÜ 77, whose certification was accompanied and audited by ATP sustain

Even before the remodeling of the former Generali Center the existing building was awarded BREEAM “Very Good” certification.

With their project for the revitalization of MAHÜ 77 (the former Generali Center) on Vienna’s Mariahilfer-Straße ATP Vienna and ATP sustain set a new standard for sustainable, lifecycle-oriented building. In November 2016 the shopping center became the first in Austria and the first retail refurbishment project in the entire DACH Region to be awarded a BREEAM Interim Certificate – Design Stage “Excellent” by the BRE – with 4 stars out of a possible 5. In terms of the final sustainable quality of the completed building ATP sustain has now not just repeated but exceeded this certification level. The increase from 75.5 % to 80.4 % was made possible by the inclusion and management of the verification of the fitting-out work carried out on behalf of tenants and the high quality of the design, documentation and realization of the execution phase.

“The special challenge in the case of existing buildings is not only the complex execution but, in particular, the collection of evidence regarding the requirements of the certification body. This is why we are particularly delighted to have met this challenge together”, says Michael Haugeneder, Managing Director of ATP sustain, commenting upon the award.

The certification process was preceded by, amongst other things, a calculation of lifecycle costs and energy optimization, an eco-audit, and a study related to low-emission technology. In addition to this, other services delivered by ATP sustain included commissioning management and building physics.

BREEAM was developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) as an environmental assessment method. This leading global method for evaluating the ecological and socio-cultural aspects of the sustainability of buildings can be applied to not only new but also existing buildings as well as refurbishment projects. It takes account of the latest legal requirements and conditions of each individual location.
