A key intermediate objective has been reached: The shell-and-core of Terminal 2 of Berlin Brandenburg Airport has been completed. It will be possible to process up to six million passengers a year here from October 2020, at which point BER Airport should also be opened.

“The wonderful thing about designing and building is the fact that one can only be successful when one works together”, says ATP CEO Christoph M. Achammer, emphasizing the excellent cooperation between the consortium made up of ATP architects engineers and amd.sigma strategic development and the clients. He sees this as the key factor for any project that is to be completed on time. A clearly satisfied Airport CEO Engelbert Lütke Daldrup addressed the topping-out ceremony: “I don’t know any public building of such a scale in Berlin and Brandenburg that has been designed, approved, and built so quickly.” The tight timetable of just seven months design work and ten months until the completion of the shell-and-core was only possible due to ATP’s tried-and-tested integrated design approach – which is built around the perfect interdisciplinary cooperation of all participants in the design process.

Simple and functional
The extension became necessary due to the fact that the main terminal was likely to be too small for the expected number of passengers upon opening. The new Terminal T2 (previously T1-E) should be compact and functional, while still being equipped with all the features required by an airport terminal. To this end, ATP has placed great emphasis on creating a building with streamlined processes that will slip effortlessly into the airport’s existing architectural and system-technical structures. The approximately 23,000 m2 provides a home to check-in, luggage delivery and -retrieval, security control, and service facilities as well as shops and restaurants. The new building is connected with the waiting areas in the north wing of the main terminal (T1) by a bridge. This is where the planes will be boarded.
