New Year Celebrations: On the first Friday of the new decade, Dario Travaš, Partner and Managing Director of ATP in Zagreb and Head of Design of ATP in Vienna, presented the competition-winning concept by Vienna’s D&R Studio – in cooperation with ATP Zagreb and supported by ATP sustain – for a 4-star hotel. Positioned at the southwestern gateway to the city it should sustainably transform its busy urban setting.
Gateway to the city
The 17-story hotel will rise to an impressive 65 meters and contain numerous rooms and suites as well as bars, shops, and lounges. As a respectful counterpart to the important Vjesnik Tower, it should make a major contribution to the reinvigoration of the entrance to the city. “In this project we focused fully on the urban factors and positioned the hotel as the gateway to the city in an urban dialogue with the Vjesnik Tower”, said Travaš during the project presentation. “Our design embodies an experiment in granting the urban district some new flair,” says the architect. The great success of this experiment was confirmed by a representative of the investors in the newspaper Total Croatia News, which reports that ATP’s proposal impressed the client enormously with its aesthetic, functional, and practical qualities. Thanks to its intelligently thought through commercial facilities, flexible conference rooms, and attractive sky bar, the object will offer accommodation with a series of advantages that the City of Zagreb currently lacks.
The best of all worlds
ATP’s integrated design for the hotel tower envisages a two-part building complex consisting of a base and a tower with six and eleven floors respectively. The environmental standards proposed for the building are similarly “high”. With its sustainable building services and energy concept and its use of such renewable sources as photovoltaic, solar, and geothermal energy the hotel is particularly energy-efficient and CO2-neutral and provides proof that the complex task of designing sustainable buildings can be mastered. Victory in the open competition was only made possible by ATP’s integrated design approach. Teams of architects and structural and building services engineers worked alongside ATP sustain to combine the best of both worlds into an ecologically high quality building.
If all goes according to plan, the groundbreaking ceremony could take place this year and the hotel should open around eighteen months later.
