The winning projects in the first “Interdisciplinary Student Design & Engineering Challenge – ISDEC 2030” were announced last Thursday at Vienna University of Technology.

Students of architecture and engineering were challenged to work together in the spirit of sustainable urban development to design an innovative mixed-use building as a means of integrating manufacturing operations in the city. The interdisciplinary nature of the teams was a basic requirement because this is a key aspect of sustainable designing and building. In the same spirit, ATP architects engineers, as a leading European integrated design company, supported the challenge as a co-organizer and as the sponsor of the 6,000-euro prize fund.

Focus on integrated and sustainable
ISDEC2030 took place this year for the very first time: It succeeds and develops the ideas behind the well-known Concrete Student Trophy, an interdisciplinary student award that was presented for the past 15 years by VÖZ. Organized by the Institute of Integrated Construction Planning and Industrial Building of Vienna University of Technology and ATP, ISDEC now focuses on resource-friendly planning and building in the spirit of the EU Green Deal.
“In future, we would like to establish ISDEC2030 as an important national student competition in the building industry as a means of further ensuring that students of architecture and construction engineering understand that integrated design is a necessary prerequisite for lifecycle-oriented, sustainable buildings,” explains Professor Christoph M. Achammer, ATP CEO and Professor of Integrated Construction Planning and Industrial Building of Vienna University of Technology.

Jury
The jury, which was chaired by ATP partner and architect Dario Travaš, honored five projects, with the 1^st prize going to the project “Starke Stadt” (Strong City). This design was particularly convincing due to its reuse of the existing built fabric and its resource-friendly building methods and focus on the circular economy.
Jury members: Dario Travaš (ATP architects engineers), Werner Sellinger (grünplan Landschaftsarchitekten, representing GRÜNSTATTGRAU), Klaus Kodydek (Vienna City Council, Circular Economy in the Built Environment), Michael Rosenberger (Vienna City Council, Urban Development and Urban Planning), and Manfred Wachtler (SÜBA AG).

Prizewinners and honorable mentions
1^st Prize (2,500 euros): Project “Starke Stadt” by Sarah Marina Kroboth, Lukas Kroboth, and Laura Sophie Ding. Excerpt from the jury statement: “The reuse and integration of the existing loadbearing structure of the Bauhaus building is applauded because this saves resources and makes a significant contribution to the circular economy. The innovative residential spatial concept of flexible and shared living is regarded as both fascinating and architecturally mature and has the potential to be used in practice.”
2^nd Prize (1,500 euros): Project “fuCity” by Katja Pitschieler and Patrick Schwab. Excerpt from the jury statement: “The jury praises the clear and consistent zoning, the bundling of the functions and the planned network of routes. Generously planted roofs and open spaces ensure sustainable rainwater management and the possibility of evaporation as a contribution to an agreeable climate.”
3^rd Prize (1,000 euros): Project “Unity Campus” by Carina Born and Cordula Anna Lechner. Excerpt from the jury statement: “The perimeter block solution with the generous atrium is evaluated extremely positively for the way in which it slips into the cityscape and creates a striking sense of place. The conceptual idea behind the project is extremely informative and creative.”
Honorable mentions, each worth 500 euros, were awarded to the projects “Atreeum” and “Green Flexibility”.
