The Faculty of Engineering Sciences of the University of Innsbruck, which has been remodeled and completely refurbished by ATP architects engineers  (Innsbruck), is on the final shortlist for the “Austrian State Prize in Architecture”. The winning project will be announced at the beginning of October.

The university building of the Faculty for Engineering Sciences is particularly noteworthy for the significant reduction in the level of energy consumption (of up to 85 %). The ecological element façade, which incorporates innovative top-hung windows with automatically controlled solar protection, can react perfectly to extreme weather conditions. The lifecycle-oriented building services concept made it possible to develop a dense, low-tech building which is largely naturally ventilated and meets EnerPHit requirements for “passive house refurbishment”.

The achievement of such high quality in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability required the perfect interaction between architects and structural and building services engineers within ATP’s integrated design process. The ATP project team was strengthened from the very first design phases by experts from the fields of lifecycle cost analysis, energy simulation, and technical feasibility studies.

Following its success in an EU-wide competition in 2009 ATP was commissioned with the redesign and general refurbishment of the Faculties of both Architecture and Engineering Sciences of Innsbruck University. The project has already received a number of awards, including the Energy Globe Tirol 2016, the TQB (Total Quality Building) Certificate and  klimaaktiv Standard Gold. In April 2016 the Faculties of Architecture and Engineering Sciences  were awarded the “Innovative Building 2016” Prize at Vienna University of Technology. In September 2016 Austria’s Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) nominated the engineering tower as a Europe-wide “Building of the Future Demonstration Project”. The general refurbishment of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences in Innsbruck was also one of two demonstration objects of “BIGMODERN”, a modernization initiative of the client, the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft m.b.H., on the basis of which target criteria are assessed in terms of their practicality.

This year, the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW) is organizing the State Prize in Architecture and Sustainability for the fifth time. This honors projects that, alongside architectural quality, also provide important accents and impulses in the area of sustainability in line with klimaaktiv criteria. In a multi-phase process the professional jury selects eleven projects worthy of recognition. The winning projects will be honored by the Minister Andrä Rupprechter during a ceremonial gala on 4th October 2017.
